The purpose of the No Dreams Deferred, Inc., is to give the youth an experience of learning different arts, crafts, cultures, etc… that have been taken out of the school district’s curriculum, in an effort to expose them to various talents, passions and encourage them to pursue these could-be gifts or interests as part of developing character, strength, inter-personal skills and career paths.
No Dreams Deferred, Inc. is a nonprofit organization geared towards providing children under the age of 18, an opportunity to learn different arts, crafts, cultures and sciences. The overall goal is to expose the participants to different activities that will increase diversity, and will help expose various talents that could possibly dwell within the participants. Most of the services/programs provided were a part of a curriculum that was included in the public school district; programs such as music, creative writing, art, sciences (with projects), home-economics, etc. One of our goals is to make these programs available to the children in our communities once again. These programs will be offered by individuals qualified to give instruction in their respective field. Classes will last approximately 4-6 weeks with some variations based on curriculum. Overall, the goal is not to make the participant proficient, but to expose them to an array of arts and then provide them the opportunity and support to pursue each craft further.
Langston Hughes wrote a poem called “A Dream Deferred” in which he questions what can happen to a dream that is deferred. Well, I believe in providing opportunities for people that have the courage to pursue their dreams. Providing opportunity through support and encouragement and making available whatever resources I have access to, in an effort to help individuals live out those dreams and passions.
