Mentor: someone who teaches or gives help and advice to a less experienced and often younger person (www.merriam-webster.com)
I am a firm believer that a man should teach a boy how to be a man. We live in a matriarchal society in which mothers are often left to raise our young men alone. While we applaud and appreciate the efforts of these strong-minded women, it’s time that as men, we step up and provide the guidance, direction and teachings to our young men; not only in our homes, but in our community.
Men Raising Men (MRM) mentoring program will be designed to provide guidance and teach young men how to be more respectful, responsible and resourceful; how to be confident, consistent and communicate; how to be providers, protectors and professional. It will provide instruction on how to be upstanding members in our community and will teach about accountability; as well as grooming, self-esteem and presentation.
MRM is a 8 week program in which young males will meet up to engage in conversation and activities that promote respect, responsibility, confidence, courage, communication, financial responsibility and more. There is a $15 registration fee per male which help cover the cost of food, activities, supplies and more. There are individuals who have agreed to sponsor young males, so if you are faced with financial challenges, please let us know. We truly do not want $15 to be the reason a male child is not provided this opportunity.
MRM will target males aged 12 & older and will be led by accomplished, established, and dedicated men in our communities that are committed to providing direction and leadership. MRM program will meet every Saturday at 11:00 at the Collective Mic Arts Cafe’ / 5010 Old York Road/ Philadelphia, PA (beginning June 4th) and end approximately 1:00pm.
Some of the components that will make up the teachings of MRM:
- Brotherhood / Networking
- Communication/Confidence/Consistent/ Community
- Women (Valuing our Sisters)
- Financial Education & Planning
