Wake Up Philly
Philly Arts will “Wake Up” Philly
In a poverty stricken city, with a lackluster school district that barely has the resources to function with the basic classes such as English, Math, History, etc. it is not a surprise that there is limited exposure to the various “arts” that we all were fortunate enough to grow up with like home economics, wood shop, music, art class, etc. These things are becoming more and more obsolete. These “arts” taught us outside skills to be the productive adults that we are today. For example, if a child that comes from a broken home had the opportunity to take a home economics class, he or she would be taught the skills necessary to take care of their home or even become a chef. A child that struggle academically but has artistic abilities would flourish in an art class and could go on to become the next Charles Schultz. Just a few examples of the kind of dreams that could come true with the right resources.
Various Arts also gives children who live not only in a poverty stricken city, but a violent one a ray of hope. If they turn on the news or even look out their front door all they see are killing after killing, they’re burying their friends at a young age or writing them letters in prison. Add that to the fact that they attend schools that do not provide them with any outside stimulation, or that they do not have the best living conditions and you have despair. Lack of resources and poor economic conditions are the cause for crimes in an inner city. These kids are waking up to a nightmare and there aren’t many avenues for them to pursue their dreams. Too many dreams are being deferred in the city of Philadelphia. No Dreams deferred is the answer to “waking up” the city of Philadelphia and providing opportunities for those kids who have lost hope and are headed down the wrong path. We want to assure that as many kids as possible dreams come true and that they never have to find out what happens to a dream deferred. It was the late great, Philadelphia’s own Teddy Pendergrass that sang “Wake up everybody no more sleeping in bed.” We’ve been sleeping too long, it’s time to wake up and save our youth.
Wake up Philly. No Dreams Deferred.
